Yankees Star Gio Urshela Exits Game 162 With Possible Ankle Injury Because This Never Ends
By Sean Facey
The injury bug is biting the New York Yankees right down to the bitter end. In the final game of the season, breakout infielder Gio Urshela twisted his ankle and was forced to leave the game after an attempt at an athletic play.
While it likely is precautionary (once again), it's nonetheless concerning. The standout star was seen limping as he left the field, the second time in a week he's been forced out of a game early, getting drilled on the hand Tuesday in Tampa.
It's certainly concerning that this happened right as the postseason is about to get underway. After all, Urshela has been a key cog in New York's offensive machine practically all year long, and the importance of his defense at third cannot be overstated.
His 3.1 fWAR ranks fifth among all Yankees batters with at least 200 plate appearances, and 132 wRC+ trails only DJ LeMahieu and Aaron Judge for the team lead.
Losing a player of his caliber would put the Yankees in a tough spot as far as infield alignment goes for the ALDS. Such an issue would likely push DJ LeMahieu to third, and place renewed emphasis on the struggling Luke Voit at first.
This will certainly be something to keep an eye on.
