Yankees Steal Son of Legendary Cubs Scout for National Crosschecking Position
By Chris Pyo
After losing one of their head scouts in Brian Barber to Joe Girardi's Phillies, the New York Yankees have gotten a good one in his place.
Midday Monday, the team hired Sam Hughes away from the Chicago Cubs to serve as their national crosschecking scout.
Hughes is the son of legendary scout Gary Hughes, who has been a scout for numerous MLB teams since the early 1970s.
Sam Hughes has been with the Cubs for over 20 years, serving as one of their head scouts during their ups and downs, culminating in their 2016 World Series championship that broke their famed 108-year championship drought.
One of his notable signings includes Geovany Soto, the former National League Rookie of the Year catcher.
Hughes actually started out his career within sports as a quarterback for Louisiana Tech University before bouncing around to multiple Arena Football League teams.
His first foray into the world of scouting was a full-time position with the Cubs prior to the 1998 draft, and he's been with them ever since, up until his move to the Yankees.
Hughes has a tall task ahead of him, as the Yankees will ask him to scout for the future of the franchise, and potentially discover the next Aaron Judge. No pressure or anything.
