Yankees Top Prospect Deivi Garcia Has Historic Effort in Division-Clincher for Double-A Trenton
By Jerry Trotta
The New York Yankees might have acquired slugger Edwin Encarnacion and welcomed former NL MVP Giancarlo Stanton back to their lineup in the last few days -- not to the mention the imminent return of world-beater Aaron Judge -- but let's not be quick to sleep on their elite farm system.
No.1 prospect Deivi Garcia delivered what was undoubtedly his best performance in Double-A in arguably the biggest outing of his young career.
The 20-year-old right-hander carried the Thunder to the first-half Eastern League Division crown Tuesday evening against Richmond with six innings of one-hit ball and a career-high 15 strikeouts. Warning: prepare a napkin because his final line might make Yankees fans drool a little.
On top of it all, those 15 strikeouts tied Trenton's franchise record that was set by Adam Warren back in 2010 and were the most in any Eastern League game since 2013.
Garcia was feeling himself right from the get-go on Tuesday, mowing down the first EIGHT batters he faced. If that's not considered setting a tone, we don't know what is.
The prospect has now racked up 67 punch-outs in only 42 innings pitched this season and has lowered his ERA to an imposing 3.00.
Something special is definitely brewing in Scranton and we presume that it's only a matter of time until Deivi is promoted to Triple-A.
