Yankees Transfer Didi Gregorius to Triple-A Rehab Assignment
By Sean Facey
Didi Gregorius is one step closer to making his return.
The New York Yankees have transferred the shortstop to Triple-A Scranton Wilkes-Barre on a rehab assignment, after only a few games at Single-A Tampa.
In two games at High-A, Gregorius went 2-for-7 with a home run, a walk, and two strikeouts. He started the season on the 60-day injured list as he recovered from Tommy John surgery, with the process taking place just a few days after the end of the team's 2018 postseason run.
Getting Gregorius back would be a huge boost for a Yankees team that's already 35-18. His return would allow Gleyber Torres to move back to second base, while also providing the team with some much-needed depth.
He finished 2018 as one of the better shortstops in all of baseball, pounding out 27 home runs in 134 games to the tune of an .829 OPS.
The good news on Gregorius comes on the same day as confirmation that starter James Paxton, who has been dealing with left knee inflammation, will make his first start since May 3 on Wednesday.
As the Yankees get healthier, the task of catching them suddenly seems more daunting for the Red Sox and Rays.
